Jack Dillon is a social worker at a local centre. He assists members of the community with their problems.

His girlfriend has recently left him. He is then asked by a colleague to visit an old lady where he is given a strange gift: five wishes.

… “Then she started sprinting to the edge of the field before the ‘Lovers walk’. I could see on this path that there were two young people running to get out of the storm. The witch pointed her arms forward before yelling ‘Beelzebub, bring down the tree. Beelzebub, bring down the earth.’ As she shouted I saw the hilltop where the tree was tear apart. It was as if giant invisible hands had torn the earth apart. The tree came crashing down upon that young farmer he had no chance. Then the witch screamed out ‘Beelzebub close her mouth’. We know that since then the young farmer’s wife has not been able to speak. Then I knew that I had witnessed the work of the devil through that young witch. I was totally shaken but then I ran back into town to fetch the constable.”

Mixed Bag: 10 Short Stories.

‘House Sale’ demonstrates that not all property ventures go to plan. In ‘The Researcher’ a central character combines his academic flair with his recreational activities. ‘The Exam’ highlights how some students approach and fare within an exam. Although I have never heard of a single exam which was similar to the story I have heard of many exams where the incidents mentioned have occurred. The ‘werewolf story’ contains fashion issues, bowl cuts, nymphomania and an STI. It is a parody on some of the ideas taken from werewolf folklore. ‘Christmas season wedding’ gives an example of the power of love and how it can move people. ‘The Political Candidate’ is a short story about a man who takes drastic measures to win votes in a local election. ‘The Model’ is a short story about a man meeting a beautiful woman who is living in diminished circumstances. It demonstrates that love and bleach can conquer all. ‘Shelving’ deals with an accident in the workplace and health and safety issues. ‘Mr Flannery’ deals with the serious issue of domestic violence. Inter partner violence is a growing problem and there are many sites on the internet such as the Mayo clinic which can give advice on what to do in such situations.  Finally ‘Face Cream’ is a whimsical story about a company and the making of pharmaceutical products.
